New to the term? Start with what a shadowban on X is.
1. Confirm it's really a shadowban
A quiet week isn't a shadowban. Run the free X Shadowban Checker: it checks whether your recent posts show up in X search. If they do, your problem is reach, not a restriction — and the fix is content, not this list.
2. Stop whatever likely triggered it
Visibility limits usually follow behaviour that looks automated or spammy. Stop, for at least a week:
- following or unfollowing in bulk;
- posting the same text or link repeatedly, or mass-mentioning accounts;
- replying with near-identical messages across many threads;
- engagement groups, follow-for-follow and bought followers or likes.
3. Clean up connected apps and automation
Schedulers, auto-DM tools and “growth” apps act as you — their behaviour counts against your account, and they also use up your rate limits. Remove anything you don't recognise or need under Settings → Security and account access → Apps and sessions.
4. Secure and verify the account
- Confirm your email address and phone number.
- Turn on two-factor authentication and change your password if an app ever had it.
- Check for warnings, locked features or labels on your posts — those are things X actually tells you about.
5. Post normally for a few days
Keep a human pace: original posts, genuine replies, no bursts. Don't go silent either — normal activity is what rebuilds trust. Avoid re-posting the exact content that was flagged.
6. Re-test, then appeal what you can
Re-run the checker after a few days. If X shows you something concrete — a locked account, a restricted feature, a label on a post — use the review or appeal option X offers for it. A hidden visibility limit can't be appealed directly, because X doesn't confirm it; steps 2–5 are the fix.
What doesn't work
- Paid “unshadowban” services. Nobody outside X can lift a restriction.
- Deleting and re-creating the account. You lose your history; the same behaviour triggers the same limits.
- Posting more to “push through”. Bursts are part of what triggers limits.
FAQ
How long does a shadowban on X last?
X doesn’t publish a duration. Anecdotally, limits tend to lift within days to a few weeks once the behaviour that triggered them stops. Re-test every few days rather than hourly.
Can I appeal a shadowban?
There is no appeal for an unannounced visibility limit, because X doesn’t confirm it exists. You can appeal things X does tell you about: a locked or restricted account, or a label on a post, through the options X shows you and its Help Center forms.
Will paying for Premium remove a shadowban?
Nothing X publishes says so. Premium changes some ranking and limits, but it is not a documented fix for visibility restrictions triggered by spam-like behaviour.
Should I delete my account and start over?
Usually not. A new account starts with no history or trust, and repeating the same behaviour will trigger the same limits. Fixing the behaviour on the existing account is the better path.
